Twelve Divine Generals

The Twelve Divine Generals project began in 2020 alongside the exploration of prayer in INVOKE. It later developed into a larger body of work in which the Shaka Triad, the Sixteen Benevolent Deities, Xuanzang, General Jinja, and the Twelve Divine Generals were each depicted as individual hanging scrolls.

Each scroll is a self-contained painting, yet also exists in dialogue with the others when installed within a shared space. By arranging these individual sacred figures as an installation, Kimura transforms the surrounding space from a place for viewing art into a place where prayer can emerge.

The paintings were created on traditional handmade Uda paper from Nara. Each was mounted as a hanging scroll by Nara-based scroll-mounting master Shosaku Yoshimura. Through the interconnected acts of painting, mounting, and placing the scrolls in space, the individual works come together to form an environment of prayer.

Wakana Kimura is seeking opportunities to present this body of hanging-scroll works - including the Twelve Divine Generals, the Shaka Triad, and the Sixteen Benevolent Deities - in dialogue with the spiritual life of temples, shrines, and cultural institutions. Each installation is conceived as an environment in which the surrounding space becomes a place of contemplation and prayer. Please contact info@wakanakimura.com to discuss exhibition opportunities and commissioning inquiries.
