NEHAN / NIRVANA is a monumental Nirvana painting created over six years to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Zenshuji Soto Mission in Los Angeles. Drawing upon the traditional imagery of the Buddha’s passing into Nirvana, the work reflects the cultural diversity of Los Angeles and was formally consecrated and dedicated to the temple in 2023. It is now revealed to the public each February as a living object of prayer and contemplation.
NEHAN / NIRVANAは、ロサンゼルスの曹洞宗北米別院禅宗寺創立100周年を記念し、6年をかけて制作した大幅の涅槃図です。釈迦の入滅を描く伝統的な図像に、ロサンゼルスという多文化都市の現在を重ね、2023年に開眼法要を経て寺院に正式に奉納されました。現在も毎年2月の涅槃会に合わせて一般公開され、祈りと瞑想の対象として受け継がれています。

NEHAN / NIRVANA is a large-scale Nehanzu (Nirvana Painting) commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Zenshuji Soto Mission, the Soto Zen temple located in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles. Created over six years, the work draws upon the traditional iconography of the Buddha's passing into Nirvana while incorporating a contemporary visual language that reflects the cultural diversity of Los Angeles.
The painting was formally dedicated to the temple during the Kaigen-Hoyo (Eye-Opening Consecration Ceremony) held at the annual Nehane (Nirvana) Ceremony in February 2023. Kaigen-Hoyo is the traditional Buddhist ritual through which a newly created Buddha image or sacred painting is consecrated and becomes an object of devotion. Through this ceremony, the work entered the spiritual life of the temple and its community rather than remaining solely an individual artistic expression.
Today, the painting is publicly displayed each February during the annual Nirvana Ceremony and continues to serve as an object of prayer and contemplation. It is exceptionally rare for a contemporary artist's work to become an officially consecrated temple painting, making this work part of the living history of the temple for generations to come.
The painting was created on a monumental 96 × 108-inch sheet of handmade Japanese paper produced by the late master papermaker Mr. Ozaki of Kochi Prefecture. One of the final works from his nearly seventy-year career, the paper itself embodies the time, knowledge, and craftsmanship of a lifetime.

NEHAN / NIRVANAは、ロサンゼルス・ダウンタウンにある曹洞宗北米別院禅宗寺の創立100周年を記念して依頼され、6年をかけて制作した大幅の涅槃図です。釈迦の入滅を描く伝統的な図像をもとに、現代的な絵画表現と、ロサンゼルスという多文化都市に生きる人々の姿を重ね合わせています。
作品は2023年2月の涅槃会において開眼法要が執り行われ、寺院に正式に奉納されました。開眼法要とは、新たに制作された仏像や仏画に宗教的な生命を迎え入れ、礼拝の対象とするための伝統的な儀式です。本作は個人の作品として完結するのではなく、寺院と共同体の祈りの中に置かれる存在となりました。
現在も毎年2月の涅槃会に合わせて一般公開され、多くの人々が祈りを捧げる仏画として受け継がれています。現代美術作家が制作した作品が正式な寺院の涅槃図として長期にわたり信仰の対象となることは極めて稀であり、本作は未来へと受け継がれていく寺院の歴史の一部となっています。
本作には、高知県の和紙職人・故 尾崎氏が漉いた243.84 × 182.88 cmの大型和紙を使用しました。この紙は、約70年にわたり和紙制作に携わった尾崎氏の晩年の仕事の一つであり、素材そのものに職人の時間と技術が刻まれています。
