NEHAN/NIRVANA, 2023, mixed media, 96 in x 72in (scroll frame not included)

In 2023, the Nehanzu painting by Wakana Kimura was delivered to Zenshuji, marking the culmination of a six-year project. The painting was commissioned to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Zenshuji temple in the Art District of Downtown Los Angeles.

The Nehanzu was unveiled during the Kaigen-Hoyo ceremony held in February 2023 at the Nehane: Nirvana ceremony. This painting is now the only official temple painting in the world created by a contemporary artist. It's a humbling thought that this piece of art will be prayed over for the next hundreds of years, as long as the temple exists.

Each year, on the day of Nehane, the Nirvana ceremony is held in February at Zenshuji Soto Mission in Downtown Los Angeles, where the Nehanzu is revealed to the public. For more information on the date, time, and ceremony, please contact Zenshuji directly at:

Note: The Kaigen-Hoyo ceremony is a traditional ceremony that consecrates a newly made Buddhist statue or image by inserting eyes, thereby investing it with a soul.
