MOMENT is an interactive installation and participatory performance that grew from my ongoing projects Daily Practice and I. For two quiet hours, the rarely opened Daishi-dō at Koyasan Beikoku Betsuin became a space where artwork, meditation, time, and the presence of visitors came together.
Capturing the Present Moment
MOMENT developed from two ongoing bodies of work, Daily Practice and I, both of which began with a question: How can the present moment be captured—or experienced—through art?
Through drawing, painting, video, and performance, I had been exploring duration, repetition, and the shifting awareness of “now.” The approach was continuous with both my monumental paintings and my smaller daily works, but MOMENT moved beyond the individual object. I wanted to create an experiential space in which the artwork, the audience, and a shared period of meditation could become part of a single event.
At the center of the installation were sheets of Japanese washi that I had repeatedly pierced and burned with the glowing tips of incense. The accumulated traces recorded individual gestures and moments in time, transforming the fragile paper through repetition.
The first MOMENT took place on March 10, 2018, in the Daishi-dō at Koyasan Beikoku Betsuin in Los Angeles. At that time, the second-floor hall was rarely used and was not ordinarily open to the public. With special permission from the temple, it opened for only two hours.
It was also my birthday and, unusually for Los Angeles, a quiet rainy day. Visitors came from near and far, entered the hall, sat silently with the work, meditated in their own ways, and eventually departed. Nothing was demanded of them. Their presence, attention, and passage through the space completed the installation.
This gathering became the beginning of MOMENT, an ongoing series through which I continue to create temporary spaces for art, meditation, and shared experience.
