CHARACTER, 2011, Mixed Media, 396in x 86in (consists of 9 panels)
CHARACTER emerged from the process of moving from Japan to Los Angeles and reconsidering the visual language I had absorbed unconsciously throughout my life.
In Japan, even small differences in line, form, color, and season can carry meanings connected to history and culture. Cherry and plum blossoms, for example, may appear similar, yet each evokes a different sense of time, memory, and symbolism. After moving to another cultural environment, I became aware that these visual distinctions were not necessarily shared or read in the same way.
In response, I brought together references to Sōtatsu, Hokusai, ancient mandalas, everyday signs, and my own marks within a single pictorial field. Visual languages from different times and cultures collide, overlap, and produce a form of structured chaos.
In CHARACTER, each mark retains an individual identity while also dissolving into a larger system. The work became a foundation for my later investigations of the Void, mandala-like composition, memory, language, and the coexistence of multiple times within a single image.
