The Death of the Buddha
The Death of the Buddha emerged in 2016 during an early stage of visual research, before Wakana Kimura began the long process that would eventually lead to the monumental NEHAN / NIRVANA at Zenshuji Soto Mission.
Rather than reproducing the complete narrative and iconographic structure of a traditional Nehanzu, Kimura approached the language of “Nehan”—Nirvana—through visual expression alone. This investigation led her to focus on the moment of the Buddha’s death: the instant in which the physical body ceases and a transition beyond ordinary existence begins.
This work is fundamentally different from the later NEHAN / NIRVANA, which was created for Zenshuji, formally dedicated to the temple, and consecrated through a Kaigen-Hoyo eye-opening ceremony. The Death of the Buddha remains an independent contemporary artwork—a visual inquiry created before the six-year journey toward a living temple painting began.

仏陀の死
The Death of the Buddha—仏陀の死は、木村若菜が後に禅宗寺の大作NEHAN / NIRVANAへと続く長い制作過程に入る前、2016年の初期研究段階で生まれた作品です。
伝統的な涅槃図の物語や図像体系の全体を再現するのではなく、「涅槃」という言葉を視覚表現だけで捉えようと試みました。その探究の結果、この作品は、肉体が終わり、通常の存在を越えた状態へ移行する、仏陀の死の瞬間を描くものとなりました。
この作品は、後に禅宗寺へ奉納され、開眼法要を経て祈りの対象となったNEHAN / NIRVANAとは、根本的に異なるアプローチから制作されています。The Death of the Buddhaは、6年にわたる涅槃図制作の旅が始まる前に生まれた、独立した現代美術作品であり、涅槃への視覚的な問いです。
