Lotus Rising: A Prayer Before Demolition
In 2016, before the former Rafu Shimpo building was demolished to make way for the Terasaki Budokan, Wakana Kimura created a temporary mural of birds of paradise and lotus flowers rising from dark mud. The work became a prayer for transformation, renewal, and what would emerge after the walls disappeared.

2016年、旧羅府新報社ビルがTerasaki Budokan建設のため取り壊される前、木村若菜は、暗い泥の中から立ち上がる蓮の花と極楽鳥を壁に描きました。この作品は、建物が消えた後に生まれてくるものと、変容と再生への祈りとなりました。
Lotus Rising: A Prayer Before Demolition
In 2016, Little Tokyo Service Center selected local artists Kent Yoshimura and Wakana Kimura to create temporary works inside the former Rafu Shimpo building in Little Tokyo. The building was scheduled for demolition and the site would later become the Terasaki Budokan. Before the walls disappeared, the artists were invited to work directly within the building and respond to this moment of transition.
At the time, Kimura was beginning to develop the ideas that would eventually lead to her monumental painting NEHAN / NIRVANA. On a wall destined to be demolished, she painted birds of paradise and red lotus flowers rising from dark mud. The lotus, which emerges from muddy water and opens into light, became an image of transformation and renewal. The birds suggested passage toward another realm.
Created in a place suspended between disappearance and rebirth, the mural became a temporary prayer—for the building, for the Little Tokyo community, and for whatever would rise after the walls came down.

泥より蓮ひらく—解体前の祈り
2016年、Little Tokyo Service Centerは、リトルトーキョーのローカルアーティストとしてKent Yoshimuraと木村若菜を選出し、旧羅府新報社ビルの内部で期間限定の作品を制作する機会を設けました。建物は取り壊されることが決まっており、その跡地には後にTerasaki Budokanが建設されました。消えていく壁を前に、二人のアーティストは建物に直接作品を描き、この移行の時間に向き合いました。
当時、木村は後に大作NEHAN / NIRVANAへと発展する構想を練り始めていました。やがて解体される壁に描いたのは、極楽鳥と、暗い泥の中から立ち上がる赤い蓮の花です。濁った泥水から光に向かって花を開く蓮は、変容と再生の象徴となりました。空を渡る極楽鳥は、別の世界への移行を思わせます。
消滅と再生のあいだに置かれたこの壁画は、建物へ、リトルトーキョーのコミュニティへ、そして壁が崩された後に生まれてくるものへ捧げる、一時的な祈りとなりました。
