IMA PHOENIX
IMA PHOENIX was created in 2022 as an experimental collaboration between Wakana Kimura and Hinoki Soken. During a live performance in the Kyudo Hall at the Museum Meiji-Mura, Kimura painted a phoenix directly onto a pristine hinoki bath handcrafted by Japanese artisans.

IMA PHOENIX was performed in collaboration with guitarist and composer Mikihiro Oguri, producer Yoko Tamura, and the Hinoki Soken team at the Kyudo Hall of the Museum Meiji-Mura.

IMA PHOENIX was created in 2022 as an experimental collaboration between Wakana Kimura and Hinoki Soken. The live painting performance took place in the Kyudo Hall at the Museum Meiji-Mura in Aichi, Japan, in collaboration with guitarist and composer Mikihiro Oguri, producer Yoko Tamura, and the Hinoki Soken team.
At the center of the project was a pristine hinoki bath handcrafted by Japanese artisans. Hinoki has long been valued in Japan not only for its beauty, fragrance, and durability, but also as a material associated with sacred architecture and ritual purity. Painting directly onto its untouched surface therefore became a bold experiment—a meeting between inherited craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression.
As society began to emerge from the isolation and upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kimura painted a phoenix rising across the hinoki surface. Appearing across cultures as a symbol of rebirth, the phoenix embodied a prayer for renewal and the beginning of a new era.
Through sound, movement, painting, craftsmanship, and the architecture of the Kyudo Hall, IMA PHOENIX transformed the act of creation into a shared ritual. The collaboration asked how tradition might remain alive—not by preserving it unchanged, but by allowing it to encounter new materials, gestures, and ideas.

IMA PHOENIXは、木村若菜と檜創研による実験的なコラボレーションとして、2022年に制作されました。ライブペインティングは、ギタリスト／作曲家の小栗幹弘氏、プロデューサーの田村陽子氏、檜創研チームとの協働により、愛知県の博物館明治村にある弓道場で行われました。
作品の中心となったのは、日本の職人が仕立てた、まっさらな檜風呂です。檜は、美しさや香り、耐久性だけでなく、日本の神聖な建築や清浄性とも深く結びついてきた素材です。その手つかずの表面に直接絵を描くことは、受け継がれてきた職人技と現代の芸術表現を出会わせる、一つの大胆な試みでした。
新型コロナウイルスによる隔絶と混乱を経て、社会が再び動き始めようとしていた時期、木村は檜の上に立ち上がる鳳凰を描きました。さまざまな文化において再生の象徴とされる鳳凰に、新しい時代の始まりと再生への祈りを託しました。
音、身体の動き、絵画、職人技、そして弓道場の建築が重なり、IMA PHOENIXは制作行為そのものを、共有される一つの儀式へと変えていきました。このコラボレーションは、伝統を変化させずに保存するのではなく、新たな素材、行為、発想と出会わせることで、未来へ生かしていく可能性を探るものです。
